Now that the lockout has mercifully ended, let’s get back to talking football.
The NFL is a passing league. But check out this bit of analysis from FootballOutsiders: “Overall, 47.2 percent of runs were out of formations with one running back… Seven of the 12 offenses with an above-average run [offense] in one-back sets made the playoffs… Of the five that didn’t make the playoffs, the Bucs and Giants both won 10 games.”
Isn’t that an interesting trend? This shows that a balanced offense still matters. It also illustrates the fact that the fullback is a dying position. Just don’t tell that to the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers, who ranked 24th in single back rush offense, and who ran with two or more running backs nearly 70% of the time!
